In the quest for glowing, youthful skin, microneedling has become one of the most popular treatments. With promises of smoother, clearer, and more radiant skin, it’s no wonder why so many people are turning to this simple yet effective procedure. But what exactly is microneedling, how does it work, and is it really the key to achieving that coveted glow?

In this comprehensive guide, we'll explore how microneedling leaves you with glowing and healthy skin, diving into its benefits, the science behind it, and how you can integrate it into your skincare routine. Ready for flawless skin? Let’s get started.

What is Microneedling?

Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, is a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure that involves using a device with tiny needles to create micro-injuries on the surface of your skin. These micro-injuries prompt your skin to repair itself, leading to increased collagen production and cellular turnover. The result? Healthier, firmer, and more radiant skin.

How Does Microneedling Work?

At the heart of microneedling’s effectiveness is its ability to harness the body’s natural healing process. Here’s a step-by-step breakdown of how it works:

  • Microneedles Create Micro-Injuries: A microneedling device creates tiny punctures in the skin. These micro-injuries are so small that they don’t cause significant or visible damage but are enough to trigger the body’s healing response.

  • Skin’s Healing Process Begins: Once these micro-injuries are created, the skin rushes to repair itself by producing more collagen and elastin, two proteins vital for maintaining skin’s firmness and elasticity.

  • New Collagen Replaces Damaged Tissue: Over time, new collagen replaces damaged tissue, resulting in a smoother, firmer, and more radiant complexion.

  • Enhanced Product Absorption: Microneedling also increases the absorption of skincare products. After microneedling, your skin is more permeable, allowing serums and moisturizers to penetrate deeper and work more effectively.

The Benefits of Microneedling for Skin Health

Microneedling isn’t just about enhancing your appearance; it also offers a wide range of benefits that improve overall skin health. Below are some of the most impactful benefits:

  1. Promotes Collagen and Elastin Production: Microneedling’s most well-known benefit is its ability to promote collagen production. Collagen is the building block of healthy skin, providing structure, strength, and elasticity. Increased collagen can make your skin look firmer, smoother, and more youthful.

  2. Reduces Fine Lines and Wrinkles: As collagen production slows with age, fine lines and wrinkles begin to form. Microneedling triggers the production of new collagen, which helps to fill in these lines and smooth the skin’s surface. Over time, you’ll notice a reduction in the appearance of crow’s feet, forehead lines, and other wrinkles.

  3. Evens Skin Tone and Texture: Whether you’re struggling with dark spots, sun damage, or acne scars, microneedling can help. The tiny injuries stimulate the skin to shed old, damaged cells and replace them with fresh ones, leading to an even complexion and smoother texture.

  4. Minimizes Pores: Large pores are a common concern for many people. They can be caused by genetics, aging, or excessive oil production. By tightening the skin and encouraging collagen production around the pores, microneedling can reduce their appearance, giving you smoother, porcelain-like skin.

  5. Improves Acne and Scarring: For those who struggle with acne or the scars left behind, microneedling offers a solution. The treatment helps break down old scar tissue and promotes the formation of new skin. This reduces the depth and appearance of acne scars, leading to smoother skin.

  6. Enhances Product Absorption: One of the lesser-known benefits of microneedling is its ability to enhance the absorption of skincare products. By creating tiny channels in the skin, microneedling allows serums and creams to penetrate deeper, making them more effective.

  7. Promotes Glowing Skin: The increased blood flow, collagen production, and skin regeneration all contribute to one of the most sought-after benefits of microneedling: glowing, radiant skin. Regular treatments can help you maintain that youthful glow year-round.

The Microneedling Process: What to Expect

Microneedling may sound intimidating, but the procedure itself is simple, safe, and relaxing when performed by a licensed professional. Here's what you can expect during a typical microneedling session:

  • Consultation: Before your session, we will discuss your skincare concerns and determine the appropriate treatment plan for you.

  • Cleansing: To begin the treatment, I will cleanse your neck and face with a rejuvenating cleanser.

  • Numbing Cream Application and Body Acupuncture: A numbing cream is applied to the treatment area to minimize discomfort. While the procedure involves needles, there is minimal to no pain, thanks to this topical anesthetic. While we wait for the numbing cream to take effect, I will place a few needles on the arms and legs to treat your body constitution.

  • Microneedling Procedure: Using a microneedling device, I create tiny punctures in the skin. The device may be rolled across the skin or used in a stamping motion, depending on your preference and the specific device.

  • Cucumber and Aloe Mask: After the microneedling is completed, I apply a calming and cooling cucumber and aloe mask. This helps to decrease some of the redness that occurs with the microneedling.

  • LED Light Therapy: Once the mask is wiped off, you will then rest under the LED light. The light has different settings depending on what skin concerns we are working on. I find the light to be very relaxing!

  • Hydrating Serum: To finish off the treatment, I will apply a hydrating serum to your face and neck.

  • Acupuncture Needle Removal: Lastly, I will remove the needles from your arms and legs and we will discuss aftercare.

Microneedling Aftercare Tips

After a microneedling session, proper aftercare is crucial to ensure optimal results and avoid complications. Here are some essential tips to follow:

  • Refrain from touching your face. It’s tempting to want to feel how smooth and lovely your skin is, but you do not want to introduce bacteria into the microchannels. I also recommend changing your pillowcase so you have a clean surface for your face at night.

  • Avoid Sun Exposure: Your skin will be sensitive after microneedling, so it’s essential to protect it from the sun. Wear a mineral based sunscreen with a high SPF and a hat if you must be in the sun, or try to stay indoors as much as possible for the first few days post-treatment.

  • Use Gentle Skincare Products: Stick to gentle, hydrating skincare products. Avoid harsh ingredients, including AHAs such as glycolic acid, retinol, vitamin c, or enzymes for 3 days post treatment.

  • Avoid sweating for 24-48 hours: This means no saunas, hot tubs, steam rooms, or vigorous exercise

  • No make-up for 24 hours, but ideally 48 hours to avoid clogging pores.

  • Stay Hydrated: Hydrated skin heals faster and looks healthier. Drink plenty of water and apply hydrating serums and moisturizers to keep your skin hydrated.

  • No anti-inflammatory medications for 24 hours (unless prescribed by your doctor).

How Often Should You Get Microneedling?

The frequency of microneedling treatments depends on your skin type and the specific concerns you're addressing. In general, every 4-6 weeks for most conditions. Once you reach your desired results, 4 times a year is recommended for maintenance. Most people see immediate benefits in skin tone and texture and deeper results in as few as 3 treatments.

Is Microneedling Right for You?

Microneedling is an excellent option for anyone looking to improve skin texture, tone, and overall health. It’s suitable for most skin types and can address a wide range of concerns, from fine lines to acne scars.

However, microneedling may not be right for you if:

  • You have an active contagious disease, such as shingles, cold sores, etc.

  • You have an active skin flare up, such as acne pustules, discoid lupus, or eczema

  • You are on coagulant or blood thinning medications

  • Cancer patients in active treatment and radiation of the skin within a year

  • Use of Accutane within the last three months

  • Have recently gotten botox or fillers - Wait 2 weeks post filler or botox
